Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of the home of a juror. Due to her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
